We all understand that sustainable community development is good for the environment, but how important is sustainability to consumers? Recent RCLCO research, as well as research by NAHB, and trends among consumer products companies indicate that there are consumers for whom sustainability is important, and some who will even pay more for it. Moreover, consumers are increasingly interested in the values of the companies they do business with and that has an influence on their purchasing behavior. This is something that is just beginning to be understood in residential real estate, and RCLCO has actively sought to better understand this trend through direct surveys with consumers as well as by examining larger societal trends and emerging norms to assess the implications for residential community development.
